Abstract: | In Nigeria the familiar problem facing researchers in economic history, especially in the precolonial era, is the absence of written records and statistical data to support factual analysis. Economic history at that period which relates economic events thus tends to be largely speculative and based on fragmentary evidence and deductive reasoning. A reliance on such speculative theory seems inevitable in discussing many aspects of economic history in Nigeria. The author examines the origin and development of African indigenous markets in Ejagham communities of the Cross River State. This study is not in antithesis with the concept that African markets owe their origin and development to external contacts, that is, that the involvement of the African society in external trade dealings of necessity led to the emergence of markets, but rather aims at stimulating academic reflection on the theme by providing some alternative seeds to the rise of African markets.
