Abstract:Focus of attention is agricultural marketing in Nigeria, its relationships with, and prospects for, rural development. Successive sections discuss the position of agriculture in the Nigerian economy; the food and agricultural export marketing systems, their problems and their efficiency; and the elements of a rural development programme. The author concludes that efficient agricultural marketing has a crucial role to play in rural development, as it stimulates both production and consumption, helps to reduce costs and increase utility and to encourage output increases. However, the agricultural marketing system in Nigeria is inefficient. The cause of inefficiencies include infrastructural inadequacies (for storage, processing, transportation, etc.), and collusive, restrictive and disincentive pricing for both food and agricultural export crops. The effects of marketing inefficiency on the rural economy include low producer incomes, stagnation in production and a high degree of wastage of agricultural commodities. Notes, ref., tab.
