Abstract:Round about 1969 President Kaunda started implementing a series of economic reforms in order to provide opportunities for Zambian nationals to participate at all levels of the labour force. The article is concerned with the impact of the economic reforms primarily in the retail and wholesale sector and contains two case studies of small businessmen and a description of two low-income African residential areas in Lusaka. At the end a comparison is made between Zambian and Kenyan small businessmen. Ref., notes, tables.
