Abstract:No attempt has so far been made to study the pattern of urban markets and examine the relationships between the African and European exchange economies. However, there is in African towns a distinctive traditional exchange pattern in addition to the 'European-inspired' economy - the two appear to be complementary. This aspect of the functional pattern of some African towns is an excellent example of the way in which the old African ways of life are not yielding place without resistance to the onslaught of the powerful forces of western civilisation'. The purpose of this paper is to identify both the traditional and European exchange economies with a view to studying their commercial patterns and economic relationships in Ibadan: Introduction (the general pattern of retail trade) - The traditional retail features (markets) - European retail features - Conclusion. Notes, figures.
