Abstract:In the course of a project undertaken for the Government Statistician's Office under the provisions of the Ordinance, figures for the trading years 1955-56, 1956-57 and 1957-58 from 101 Levantine trading firms in Ghana were collected and are analysed in this paper. The intention was not to examine all the returns sent in by Levantine trading firms, but merely to collect sufficient material to provide a comparison with the African sector of the trading community, on the assumption that the Levantines constitute the non-African sector which most closely competes with the African. It must be noted that some of the largest Levantine trading firms are not included here. Tables; graphs.
