Abstract: | In the course of the 20th century there appear to have been several types of changes taking place in the fish trade operated by the Central Accra market women of Ghana. Changes because of social factors (the increase of education for girls) have caused a weakening primarily in the compound fish-processing organization and changes because of economic factors (the introduction of mechanized trawling and cold-storage facilities) have primarily affected fish-marketing conditions. The combined effects of the changes have been profound in both spheres: eroding mother-daughter economic bonds and creating a monopolistic situation in concentrating the supply of fish in a few hands. The paper examines this evolution in the fish trade. Fig., notes, ref., tables. |
