Abstract: | Presents some data gathered during research conducted in Zolowo, Lofa County, Liberia and in Monrovia, in 1968. While the Loma of Zolowo also have been involved in labor migration to Harbel and other concessions, this study concentrates on migrancy to Monrovia, which movement began in earnest during the first World War. Concentrating on the network of ties between Zolowo and Zolowo emigrants living in Monrovia and stressing the two-way flow of visits, the author is led to postulate, from the extent and nature of the ties maintained by those in Monrovia, a low commitment to urban life. The frequency of visits - those to Zolowo more frequent than the reverse - underline the increasing importance of the growing Liberian road network. Amplified is the important role of women as visitors and go-betweens in maintaining the network of ties between Zolowo and the capital. Notes. |
