Abstract:President Nyerere has set forth the principle that must guide the development of education in Tanzania in 'Education for Self-reliance'. In March 1967 the President has published a second policy paper, 'Socialism and Rural Development' in which he advanced a plan for building socialist producers' cooperatives in the countryside. The purpose of those institutions is to enable the peasants to solve both their economic and their social problems, to secure for themselves both a higher material standard of living and a richer social life. The author examines in this paper the role of education in contributing to the success of ujamaa village living: Who is to be educated? - Educational needs - 'Organisation of education in the Ujamaa Village - Help from the outside.
