Abstract:It is assumed that, if modern ujamaa villages were organized on the principles which sustained the traditional extended family system, a type of development would be achieved in accordance with the ideological criteria for Tanzania's development: self-reliant, genuinely socialist, regionally and sectorally well-balanced, in democratic freedom. This essay assesses, both theoretically and on the basis of available evidence, the prospects and problems this approach entails. After some remarks on 'Tradition and modernity' the second part of this essay concentrates on the distinction between the ujamaa of post-Arusha Declaration and the traditional ujamaa-ujima system, and on the problems and prospects of implementing President Nyerere's three principles of ujamaa living, namely 1) mutual respect, 2) sharing of joint production, and 3) universal obligation to work.
