Abstract:In the current debate over the status of the professional librarians in the Nigerian Institues of higher learning there are two major participants: 1. the academic librarians who claim they are entitled to full academic status, with all that it implies, and 2. the teaching staff which, not sharing the librarians' view, rather are of the opinion that academic librarians are 'high grade clerks' who perform no academic functions except to the extent that the arrangement and issue of books may be considered an academic exercise. College and University administrators whom one would expect to be impartial observers tend to take side with the academic staff. The current confusion and consequent argumentation over the status of the academic librarian stem from a general misconception and a lack of appreciation of the position and role of the librarian in an institutional setting. This paper attempts to throw some light on these and in so doing to subject the claim to academic status of the professional librarian in an academic community to some critical examination. Ref.
