Abstract: | This paper examines one of the educational objectives in Kenya, namely, that the 'schools of Kenya must respect the cultural traditions of the people of Kenya both as expressed in social institutions and relationships'. The objective underlies the proposition that education as a social service is responsible for the transmission and perpetuation of culture. It will be shown that the proposition is a truism. The paper then explores the persistent conflict between the school system and the people's traditional cultures. It will be shown also that what can the school (educational) system were inescapable because the parties involved were of different cultural heritages. This is despite early suspicions and efforts to avoid the same. The underlying argument is that if graduates of the school system can be shown to be culturally alienated, then they are incapable of being effective agents in the exercise of preserving and fostering traditional cultures.
