| Abstract: | On the problems of urbanization and modernization and their impact on folklore, with specific reference to the Democratic Republic of the Sudan. The first part of the discussion deals with the establishment of an urban elite culture, which goes back to the early decades of the 19th century and heralds the introduction of urbanization and modernization. It also attempts to elucidate the attitude of the African urban elite to folklore and the influence of that attitude on folklore scholarship in Africa. The second part deals with the more intesive and overwhelming spread of urbanization and modernization during the second part of this century and its impact on some folklore genres. The presentation in that part is based on the experience of the Department of folklore at the University of Khartoum, the only full-fledged one in Africa. Bibliogr., notes. |
