Abstract: | In the southern province these levels are two-thirds higher than in the north. It seems likely that differences in the disease environment account for most of the regional contrast. Khartoum is the area of lowest mortality, although it is still high by developed country standards. Within Khartoum, women born into higher classes and urban areas have lower mortality among their children. The relationship with social class of origin largely works through the greater amount of education that the woman typically receives. Tab. |
