Abstract:This article explores the extent to which Africa's social and culture heritage is enhancing or retarding its development. It is argued that the following cultural changes need to be engendered: a movement away from a microcosmic to a macrocosmic perspective; a change in the analysis of nature in terms of its potential for man; a change from emphasis on the community to emphasis on the individual; the replacement of a consumption-oriented disposition towards Africa's resources by a creation-oriented disposition; the substitution of the 'strong man' ideal with symbols that encourage progress and development; the elimination of undue emphasis on the past; the development of new educational methods; and avoidance of anything that emphasizes tribal loyalties.
