Abstract:If the present school system is not neutral with regard to the socio-economic environment in which children live, might this not largely be the result of the socio-cultural model which it conveys? In particular, the content of the socio-economic and cultural messages transmitted by the school and, more specifically, by textbooks, should be determined. For example, questions might be asked concerning the origin of such messages, the topics discussed, the nature of the social success they imply, and the type of development of which they are the vectors, as well as the kinds of energy they are aiming to mobilize, the insight they provide into the social realities of the country, and the illusions which they foster. In an effort to answer such questions, the author analysed the content of textbooks in use in Senegal for teaching French in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades of primary school. Notes, tab.
