Abstract: | By comparing the opinions, attitudes, and social behaviour of adults who have finished a program of literacy, with those of a control group, which did not attend the course, one gets more insight into the functional meaning of literacy courses. This survey proves that literacy does not only meet the need to communicate with others, but that it stimulates the farmers' efforts to keep pace with developments in tobacco production. Besides, the respondents associate functional literacy with benefits for themselves, as well as for their children, their friends and their community. Beyond the results, the method of investigation is discussed. Notes, tables, ref., index. |
