Abstract: | For over 2,500 years, Africa South of the Sahara has been an object of cultural study; now it is henceforth to be also a subject of cultural study, examining itself and communicating its experiences in self-conscious spiritual freedom. In ensuring the effective underpinning of the role of culture in Nigeria's national development three major considerations should be born in mind: rehabilitation, activation and propagation. African culture - and ipso facto Nigerian culture - is essentially spiritual and humanistic and for that reason also it must be preserved in a world that is becoming more and more technological and materialistic. Nigerian institutions, such as the National Antiquities Commission, the Federal Department of Antiquities, universities, schools, colleges and museums should play a role in promoting Nigerian cultural development. A Cultural Commission is needed which can provide an overall umbrella of policy for the direction of all the cultural activities. |
