Abstract: | An assessment of the progress of the Khasm el Girba scheme in Kassale Province in Sudan, an attempt to settle nomads. The greatest lesson that can be learnt from the scheme is that, if the population involved in settlement is not interfered with when presented with a situation which they cannot alter, then, left their own initiative, they will adapt to that situation and, furthermore adapt the situation itself to work for them, and by so doing make it beneficial in the wider context of the country as a whole.
