Abstract: | In Lesotho, voluntary associations tend to attract many members, mostly women of low and middle income groups in both rural and urban areas. They range from religious, political, and agricultural associations to socioeconomic groups. This article focuses on burial societies and money-lending (or Christmas) clubs. It discusses how these institutions operate; their benefits and weaknesses; factors influencing their sustainability; and how they contribute to the development of the informal sector.
