Abstract:The cereal market of Burkina Faso was liberalized in 1992. At the same time a market information service (SIM, Système d'information des marchés) was created to collect data on supply and demand conditions and, in particular, to disseminate the cereal prices of regional markets weekly by radio. The paper evaluates to what extent the existence of this service contributed to the integration of the market. The markets selected for the analysis are divided into four regional categories: urban markets in deficit regions (Ouagadougou) and surplus regions (Bobo-Dioulasso); semi-urban markets and regions with regular deficits (Kaya, Koudougou and Ouahigouya); rural markets with regular surpluses (Dedougou and Fada); and rural markets with regular deficits (Pouytenga). A cointegration analysis, and more precisely a comparison of the results for the whole period under study (1990-1995) with the results for the period 'after SIM' (1992-1995), leads to the conclusion that the impact of the diffusion of prices on market integration is moderate. In general, SIM does not have a significant influence on the integration of cereal markets. Bibliogr., notes, ref.
