Abstract: | Western Sudan, in particular Northern Darfur, has experienced continuous population movements. Development of the Khasm-el-Girba Agricultural Scheme, east of Khartoum, in 1964 attracted over 40.000 Western Sudanese, mainly from Northern Darfur. Most of them are agricultural workers, but unlike the cotton pickers who go to the Gezira, most of them are permanent and semi-permanent migrants. This paper studies the movements of these labourers to the scheme, their motives for movement, their characteristics as well as aspects of population policies that are linked with agricultural movers.
