Abstract:The complex ethnic and cultural conditions in Ethiopia, to some extent aggravated by the traditional Christian-Islamic rivalry, have seriously hindered the development of a united Ethiopian nation. The article examines the part played by educational policies and problems in furthering or impeding national unity. Parts of the article: 1. Cultural diversity and policies for amharisation - 2. The historical background of education in Ethiopia - 3. The lack of resources for education (Just over one per cent of the whole population is to be found in all the country's educational institutions; low standard of teaching in most government schools) - 4. The effects of inadequate resources - 5. The implications for Ethiopian National Unity.
