Abstract:Whatever the outlook for social science in Africa: there will be a steady and rapid increase in the number of scolars studying urban Africa. This is not merely a reaction to the closing of conventional areas of interest to the social anthropologist. The view is current that the study of African urban life can and does contribute to the systematic study of structure and function of social institutions - the anthropologist's main concern. Reviewing the impressive array of publications on urban Africa the author draws the conceptual and theoretical lines of development of that literature, Hereafter he presents his thoughts on the orientation, approaches and techniques which could help research in urban Africa.
