Abstract: | This study deals with the strength and persistence of tribalism under modern urban conditions in Africa. The young, illiterate migrants often prefer to remain as far as possible with members of their own tribe. Life in the new urban environment tends to make tribal consciousness stronger. In this study the author gives a survey of the several forms through which this tribal consciousness appears: secret societies, cults, non-kinship organisations, age-sets, associations based upon common membership of a particular lineage, improvement or progressive unions, religious organisations, associations to provide funds for burial, women's associations.
