| Abstract: | The history of psychology in Nigeria is a very short one. It was in September, 1964, that the first Department of Psychology in any Nigerian university was established at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Before then, the psychology courses that were taught were offered in the Colleges and Departments of Education. In this paper, an attempt is made to discuss the psychology that may be more relevant to Nigeria's immediate needs and circumstances, given the limited resources, with special reference to the Nigerian experience, without diluting the essential attributes, fundamental tenets and tested laws of psychology as a discipline. The writer shares the belief that with current Western-based findings in psychology, generalizations to Africa may be dangerous. The main objective of psychology in Nigeria should be to help not only educators develop optimally the Nigerian child, but also to help the adult - still living with his colonial past - understand himself and erase misconceptions and over-generalizations about himself and who he is.
