Abstract: | It is not the author's aim in this paper to evaluate William Goode's assertion 'that much of the African industrialized and urbanized population is living in a state of social disorganization'. On the contrary the objective is to systematically identify some of the common values of the Igbo-speaking peoples and attempt to analyse them rationally. There is some literature on the beliefs and attitudes of the Igbo. But the realm of concern here - that is a systematic analysis of existing knowledge of social values seems not to have been dealt with at length. There may not be a total acceptance or even a consensus as to the importance of the social values, but in general terms the existence of these values in Igbo culture cannot be denied. The author exposes the things that traditional Igbo society values. Finally, some sayings and names reflecting Igbo social values on: marriage - women - children - obedience - inter-dependence - the village - family loyalty - land - democracy - education - religion - good morals. |
