Abstract:The aim of this paper is first to correct the misinformation contained in a recent article on the historical development of Islam in East Africa by M. Ali Kettani (J. Inst. Muslim Minority Aff., vol. 4, no. 1/2 (1982); p. 104-119) through an academic analysis of the facts and further to analyse the relation between Christianity and Islam, historically and demographically. The author then takes up the socio-political dimension of the relation between the two religions and examines their contribution to the creation of a secular state like Tanzania. The discussion focuses on the following aspects: the household level, the village, and the national level. - Notes, tab.
