Abstract: | This is an attempt to compare the struggles over the social and political role of religion in Israel and Egypt. Taking two of the four patterns of secularization, described by Donald Eugene Smith in 'Religion and Political Development' (Boston, 1970) - namely polity-expansion secularization, where the polity extends its jurisdiction into areas of social and economic life formerly regulated by religious structures, and polity-transvaluation secularization, which involves the secularization of the political culture the author examines each country in respect to these two categories. Sections: Israel (polity-expansion secularization; polity-transvaluation secularization; conclusion) - Egypt (polity-expansion secularization; religious reform in Egypt since the revolution; polity-transvaluation secularization; conclusion) - Similarities and differences between Israel and Egypt.
