Abstract:The object of this chapter is to study the dynamics of African societies still in control of their own fate, at least in appearance. Only in Senegambia, on the Upper Niger, and among the Asante and the Yoruba, can major developments be seen as the direct or indirect result of growing European pressure. Elsewhere, the balance brought about by the revolutions of the preceding period was either stable or else changing only slowly. A thematic study being excluded, each section of the area is dealt with in turn: From the Senegambia to the rivers of Guinea - From Sierra Leone to the Bandama - From the Bandama to the Volta - From the Volta to the Niger - From the Upper Niger to the Upper Volta - From the Upper Senegal to the Middle Niger - The Central Sudan.
