Abstract:There is a dearth of written records on the history of Islam and the Muslims in Benin City and its environs in the Bendel State of Nigeria. Consequently, the present paper depends largely on oral traditions and the results of the author's research tours conducted in the area in the period 1968-1973. The information on the history of Islam and the Muslim community, past and present, is arranged according to administrative division: Benin City, Benin West (Ogbese, Utese, Usen) and Benin East (Abudu).
