Abstract:Documents all the known facts on shamanism as it is practised in the original Darwin district in the north-east of Rhodesia. Since ethno-history and oral traditions play such a significant part in the shamanistic scheme of the present day, the author discusses in part 1 the legend of Mutota and the migration from the south; the religion of spirit possession: shamanism; and the ecstatic religion of the Shona. In part 2 he describes the chiefdoms and tribal structure in the Mount Darwin district.
