Abstract:As distinct from Malinovski's view of myth, reflected in his 'Myth in Primitive Psychology', later anthropologists have proved that myth does not always operate as an integrating force in a society. On the contrary, myth itself becomes very often the focus of controversy, being manipulated as au instrument to justify different interests. This paper indicates how certain members of a lineage group may rearrange crucial characters of their myth, when claims to status and property come up for discussion. It makes clear how differing versions of a mythical charter, may be linked to changes in the relations of individuals and segments to lineage property and to one another, resulting in a redistribution of power and authority within a lineage. Parts of the article: The Yombe - The Vidi of Joko - A dispute over a charter - The basis of disputes - The genealogical dispute - Summary and conclusion. Notes, genealogy, ref., French summary.
