Abstract:The major values on which Saharo-Sahelian societies rested - harmony, sexual modesty, respect for age, mutual aid and solidarity, hospitality, friendship - are becoming destabilised by development, from outside. Old knowledge is challenged without any real alternatives being provided. The fact that the education of children, their socialization into the values adhered to by a society, is also being abolished indicates the gravity of the situation, illustrated by the words of one Sahelian: 'We are in the process of losing our soul'.
