| Abstract: | Canon Winspear arrived in Nyasaland in 1906 and is still there, living in a home for elderly Europeans at Limbe. His memoirs bring before our eyes the change in a generation of the pace of Central African life from that at the ox to the earoplane. He shows the difference of his work and life from that of to-day and indicates how the centuries old African 'culture' is reacting to the impact of modern civilization. The article comprises the following chaptes: The Journey to Nyasaland in 1906; Communications; Barter; The parish work of the S.S. Chauncy Maples; African culture to-day as compared with fifty years ago. |
