| Abstract: | Gungunhana ruled for a little more than ll years (1884-1895) in Southern Mozambique and a small part of what is now Rhodesia. His influence reached in the west to among the Shona and ndebele, in the South to the Swazi and in the North to perhaps a hundred miles north of the Sawe River. The A. is surprised that he received so little biographical attention. His relations with the Portuguese government and the British commercial interests alone would make him notable; he shared a similar situation with other contemporary African leaders and his downfall was a milestone in the history of southern Mozambique. He died in 1906. Background - Reign, 1884-1894 - Gungunhana and the campaign of 1895 - Capture, exile and death - Epilogue. |
