Abstract: | The objective of technological self-reliance does not imply autarchy. Rather the problem is one of achieving an appropriate balance between foreign and local supplies of technology. To set the foundation for an indigenous Nigerian technological capability, a comprehensive or systems approach to technological manpower development should be adopted. Apart from the formal or informal training needed to acquire the necessary skills, other components of the package include adequate salaries and fringe benefits to attract people to train for and remain in the profession, attractive career prospects and provisions for performance improvement. Only when such an approach is adopted will Nigerians stop looking down on technicians, and will technicians stop feeling inferior to other professions. Bibliogr., ref. |
