Abstract:It was in the period 1842-1882 that literary education of the Western type was first effectively introduced, to Nigeria by Christian missionaries. Presented is the history of the considerable progress during that period of missionary education. The gradually emerging lines of educational policy were hindered by shortness of money to finance the growing enrollment in primary schools in particular. Also co-ordination of the efforts of the various missions towards agreed ends was missing. It was at this point that government came in to satisfy both needs. Ref.
