Abstract:Modern education in the Sudan can be considered as beginning with Condominium rule when the Government began to establish a framework of schools of a 'western type' in the main towns of the northern Sudan. The Government took little interest in education in the southern Sudan until the mid-1920s when the present institutions were developed through financial and professional co-operation with the missionary societies already working in the South. In 1948 a unified educational policy began to be adopted for the northern and southern Sudan. Although little scientific study has yet been made of education in the Sudan there are various official reports, the conclusions of external educational commissions, short accounts and references to educational development in works mainly devoted to other subjects. There are also articles in learned and other journals, some of which have been written by educators and administrators actively engaged in educational affairs. From these a dated general outline of development of education can be traced, Notes.
