Abstract: | Aim of the essay is to highlight gaps in existing knowledge of African women and bring to light new queries. Attention is given to the strategies employed by women to maximise their benefits in society. The focus is on the institutions of women-to-women marriage and the matrifocal family. Three case studies are presented (women-to-women marriage among the Kamba - independent women among the Ganda - single unskilled female urban migrants in Namuwongo Wabigalo-Kampala), followed by comments.
