Abstract:General studies of traditional religions are without reference to founders. In this study, after a summary of the discussion on culture heroes and the anthropological assumptions behind this classification, a typology of religious founders is suggested and applied to three African traditions: the Nupe, Nama Hottentots and Shilluk. This thematic rearrangement of the material, which takes into consideration the category of founder, has implications for the understanding of African high gods and the ritual process through which Africans respond to the sacred.
