Abstract:This article brings the approaches of economics and anthropology together. The argument is that at different stages of its development 'the family' is in effect a different economic unit, making distinctive demands on its resources and using its changing endowments of land, labour and other agricultural inputs in particular ways. The A's first identify the range of domestic relationships current in Ganda society. Then these interrelationships are grouped into sets which characterize the various distinct stages of domestic development. Turning to the economic survey of Ganda households the A's examine the composition of each and allocate it to a group corresponding to one of the domestic cycle stages. Selecting a few key variables they then compare the economic and agricultural performance of these groups. The final sections discuss how well these domestic cycle categories account for the differences within the sample of households, in comparison to possible alternatives. Finally, specification of the ways in which the findings serve to illuminate historical change and planned development in Buganda. Bibliogr., notes, tab., fig.
