Abstract: | Important structural changes were occurring in the Gold Coast economy in the period following abolition. A case study of the palm oil trade from 1807 to 1842 serves as illustration. With the beginning and growth of palm oil production on the Fante coast came the development of a money economy, a clearer division of labour, and Western-style social stratification. The trade in palm oil facilitated the import of European goods with which the products of local industry could not compete. While it did little to further internal economic development, it did much to encourage dependency. Map, notes. |
