Abstract:The present paper is a summary of a report of an evaluation mission on the needs of pastoral children-youth carried out by ENDA (Environment and development in the third world) on behalf of UNICEF and the national committee for the international year of the child. Main concern is to analyse basic problems as identified by children and youth (up to 25 years old) of the pastoral community of Labgar, in the north-west of the Ferlo. Together they make up almost 62.6% of the population in the area under study. The involvement of children and young people in economic activities, predominantly pastoralism, is described, and brief mention is made of reasons for rural migration. The needs evaluated covered in particular food, health, education and training, living conditions, water policy, and improvement in cattle farming and responsibilization of the young. A number of features emerged: interaction between needs, strong similarity, and the permanent nature of certain needs. Fig., maps, notes, ref., tab.
