| Abstract: | The article gives background information on the Kabiye of the Tchitchao district of Togo. They are of negroid physical type. Their language belongs to the Voltaic subfamily. Their tribal area is situated on the slopes of the Lama mountains, between the kingdoms of the Ashanti (west) and the Benin (east), against whom they had to defend themselves for many years, mainly on account of slave-raiding. After colonization by Prance, the tribal hierarchy was officially recognized and accommodated in the government system, especially judicially. These peoples are patrilineal, patrilocal agriculturalists, utilizing a fairly sophisticated technology and having trade links with the coastal areas. Though most of the Kabiye are nominal Christians they have retained respect for their traditional religion. - Fig., ref., sum. in Afrikaans. |
