Abstract:Political authority and the control of wealth in So (north-west Uganda) are linked inextricably with age as a determining factor. Their age system the So borrowed from the Karamojong, sometime after 1900. However, both in its formal aspects and in its manifestations in functional behaviour the So system differs significantly from that of the Karamojong. After a description of the generation system among the Karamojong and the So, the conclusion is that the differences are non-random and systematic, constituting, as it were, a logical and socialfunctional interface between the traditional social structure and the imported system.
