| Abstract: | The Idoma today inhabit an area of land which lies within the lower valley of the Benue River. This homeland is flanked by the Tiv to the east; the Igala to the west; the Alago and Igbira to the north and the Igbo to the south. Their ancestors in pre-colonial times had come from different sources and directions and through a network of interconnected events built this modern homeland. Attempted in this paper is an examination of a series of crises which characterised the institution of chieftaincy which the Idoma ancestors evolved between circa 1600-1900. Notes, map. |
