Abstract:Examines two of the more successful smallholder irrigation schemes in Southern Africa, i.e. Taung Irrigation Scheme in Bophuthatswana and Vuvulane Irrigation Farms in Swaziland; with emphasis on the development framework for planning. Such a development framework provides the smallholder with the motives and means to achieve commercial production and minimizes the risk attached to commercial production for the smallholder.
