| Abstract: | From the conclusions: The argument for some kind of integration among the countries of Central and est Africa is generally supportable: most of these countries have extremely narrow domestic markets, which inhibit the establishment of new industries. The economic gains from integration cannot in present circumstances be derived through other means. Integration, however, should not constitute the only objective of economic policy: there is no full substitute for the trade with the advanced markets. Although the difficulties of integration are not to be underestimated, the cardinal importance of political factors: the political will to cooperate, must be emphasized. with regard to other preconditions, the outlook for the countries of Central and west Africa may be considered favorable.
