| Abstract: | The outline history of the West African Frontier Force (WAFF) is fairly well-known, but it cannot be said that the final word has been written about it. Intention here is to re-examine the military administration and long-term objectives of the WAFF and to demonstrate that by 1914, what was originally conceived as an army of colonial subjugation had been transformed into a regional imperial reserve force for larger functions in any general war in which the British were involved. In a sense, the WAFF should be seen as a West African contribution to British imperial defense. This study shows that the WAFF which had begun as an army of colonial subjugation had, by 1914 been transformed into an efficient military machine capable of effective participation in a war with a European power. - Notes, tab. |
