Abstract: | African Governments, educators and some regional and international organisations have, in recent years, increasingly focussed their attention upon the popularization of science and technology among the urban as well as the rural populations. The Science Education Programme for Africa (SEPA) and Unesco are among the organisations that have been in the forefront of this movement. A specific aspect of science education is the popularisation of out-of-school science and technology. This aspect has been discussed in 1971 on a seminar in Lusaka. More recently, three workshops, especially concerned with out-of-school scientific and technological activities, were organized by the Regional Office for Education in Africa: in Dakar (1980), Lome (1982) and Lusaka (1982). These workshops led to the production of a 'Guide for Key Personnel engaged in Out-of-school Scientific and Technological Activities' (1983). The present article gives information on the efforts that are being made by African countries to clarify the concept, assess the need and determine the modalities of a coherent and meaningful programme of out-of-school educational activities in science and technology.
